Received recently from Brian Read:
I was delighted to have received such an excellent response to the contributions made for the collection of old tools for the "Tools For Self Reliance" scheme I'm involved in. It gave Harold Wells and John Jones a mammoth opportunity to clear out many of the redundant items that have been repeatedly displayed but never sold on Rally days and White Elephant sales. I'm sure many members may know of Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR) but for those who are not sure who they are, their website is www.tfsr.org
They have regional workshops in various parts of the UK and I recently took seven big cartons of tools to their Sutton workshops where they refurbish them before despatch. They were absolutely delighted and wish me to pass on their thanks to the club and others who donated. I would stress the importance of the servicability of anything being offered and everyone should really take a careful look at what they are donating and decide whether it can be made serviceable. Surface rust doesn't matter and they have facilities to sharpen saws, chisels, drills etc.
I am in contact with, and support, two charitable organisations who constantly need tools - one being TFSR and the other is Aquabox which is administered by the Rotary Club of Wirksworth, Derbyshire. They require items like screwdrivers, nails, pliers etc. and smaller domestic items that fit their emergency aid boxes. Again to authenticate what they need, and how they do it click onto www.aquabox.org
I'll be pleased to act as a collector for both the above charities and welcome contact with any club members who wish to support these schemes. It costs nothing and does an enormous amount of good directly to those seriously disadvantaged people that need help. These schemes are far more practical and effective than monetary donations as currency becomes worthless if there's no corner shop to buy anything as a result of some disaster or other. A man given a set of serviceable tools can be of far more practical use.
Thanks
Brian Read
